Our Training Philosophy

The world isn’t all sunshine & rainbows. It can be a dangerous place, especially for the vulnerable & under-prepared. There are people out there who have total disregard for the law & violence on their minds. Unfortunately for some people, its all they know. You never know these days who might be armed with a weapon, has combat training under their belt, is under the influence of mind-altering drugs or just having a bad day. All it can take is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to become a victim- who knows to what severity. It’s also worth mentioning that here in Australia, we’re not legally permitted to own or carry any type of object for the purpose of self-defense. So what can you do to equalize that type of situation?

Learning a Martial Art is one of the best ways to equip yourself with the tools necessary to protect yourself & others against the unthinkable. Of course these type of scenarios may be unlikely, in fact most people go about their whole lives without ever experiencing that type of threat. But having the trained ability to physically defend yourself is like having air bags in your car or a fire extinguisher in your home- It keeps you prepared for the worst. Most un-trained people’s natural reaction is to freeze up or retreat when faced with aggression & violence. It’s better to be safe than sorry & get some sort of training to increase your chance of survival, even if you never have to use it.

Wing Chun Kung Fu is an incredibly effective Martial Art that can arm you for all sorts of random/sudden violent encounters, whether mild or extreme. Its simple, direct, practical & is designed to take control & end violent situations quickly, while taking into account of the ever-changing & unpredictable factors of a ‘street’ environment. When trained properly, Wing Chun technique is fast, explosive, powerful, deceptive & can be devastatingly brutal when necessary. Perfect for self-defense situations where your life could be on the line.

Unfortunately though, Wing Chun has developed a reputation for being an ineffective or ‘fake’ fighting style across the broader Martial Arts community. This is idea has been popularised by certain videos of different Wing Chun practitioners & ‘Masters’ getting their butts handed to them by practitioners of other systems like MMA. But the fact of the matter is that the effectiveness & legitimacy of a Martial Art is not determined by the art itself, but by how it is taught & trained.

Many Wing Chun schools seem to more often than not share a few distinct commonalities between them; Minimal knowledge on other common & highly effective fighting systems, over-traditionalised training regimes filled with techniques/tactics that may look impressive in demonstration, but will only work against compliant partners, a lack of pressure testing the techniques & little to no full-contact sparring- an essential aspect of Martial Arts training.

At the end of the day, the harsh reality of fighting is that you will fight & respond in the same manner in which you have trained. To become proficient in combat, you have to step out of your comfort zone, pressure test & spar. This is common practice in Boxing, Muay Thai & MMA gyms, & it’s why they all work- because they train to MAKE it work. You’ll never know how to swim without actually getting in the water. That is a fact which cannot be argued & that’s where this Wing Chun school stands out compared to others.

Most people hold themselves back from taking up combat training, be it due to different priorities, fear of injury, environmental intimidation, self-doubt & so on. But it’s wise to keep in mind that the world is becoming more unsure & tense, as are the people on it. Taking even one class a week could end up saving your life or someone else’s around you. You don’t need to be made of steel to start, toughness & skill is not something that is born, it’s something that is built. It’s true that there are individuals with natural talent above others. However, hard work & correct guidance is a time-tested way to close the gap between talent & skill.
