Our Training Philosophy

The world isn’t all sunshine & rainbows. It can be a dangerous place, especially for the vulnerable & under-prepared. There are people out there with sinister agendas, a chip on their shoulder, total disregard for the law & violence on their minds. For some people, its all they know. To make matters worse, you never know these days who is armed with a weapon or a trained/experienced fighter with the ability to cause serious harm. All it takes is for you to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to become a victim- to who knows what severity. Not to mention that here in Australia, we’re not legally permitted to own or carry any type of object for the purpose of self-defense. So what can you do?

Learning a Martial Art is one of the best ways to equip yourself with tools to protect yourself & others against the unthinkable. Of course these type of scenarios may be unlikely, in fact most people go about their whole lives without ever experiencing that type of threat. But having the trained ability to physically defend yourself is like having air bags in your car or a fire extinguisher in your home- It keeps you prepared for the worst. In my opinion, to assume you will never have to deal with a violent situation, or thinking you would just ‘have what it takes’ is a foolish thought process. Most peoples natural reaction is to freeze up or retreat & there are far too many variables of who/what/when/where/why/how to ever be that sure of yourself. It’s better to be safe than sorry & get some sort of training to increase your chance of survival, even if you never have to use it.

Wing Chun Kung Fu is an incredibly effective Martial Art that will arm you for all sorts of random/sudden violent encounters. It’s designed to take control & end violent situations quickly while taking into account of the ever-changing & unpredictable factors of a ‘street’ environment. When trained properly, Wing Chun technique is short, fast, explosive, powerful, deceptive & can be devastatingly brutal when necessary. Perfect for self-defense situations where your life could be on the line.

Unfortunately though, many Wing Chun schools seem to more often than not share a few distinct commonalities between them; Over-traditionalised training regimes with little/poor knowledge on other common & highly effective fighting systems like Boxing, Wrestling/BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA etc, a lack of pressure testing techniques & little to no sparring- an essential aspect of Martial Arts training.

These schools will likely have gatekeeper-like ‘demo-master’ instructors who show flashy & unrealistic techniques on static/over-compliant students, but are never seen to spar or sweat it out on the pads with the rest of the class. That’s not to say that there aren’t genuine reasons for this such as inability due to injuries or age etc. But in a lot of cases, this conduct simply boils down to lack of knowledge/experience with real violence & a fear of appearing incapable or fraudulent when they are shown to posses to real combative skill, which would be detrimental to a schools reputation. There are many arguments between people online about the matter, but at the end of the day the harsh reality of fighting is that you will fight & respond in the same manner in which you have trained. You’ll never know how to swim without getting in the water. That is a fact which cannot be argued & that’s where this school stands out.

Without sparring, your Martial Art is just Art and your sword is just a paintbrush

Power House offers a more private & personal training environment, with classes being conducted for a smaller number of students than most typical Martial Arts schools. This ensures better quality control & offers the instructor the ability to spend more time guiding each student through their development with greater attention to detail, catering to the needs & capabilities of the individual. This is a school for students who are well-meaning, dedicated, motivated, self-improvement oriented & want to train like real Martial Artists in the art of Wing Chun Kung Fu.

My goal as the Instructor is to help sculpt students into highly skilled Martial Artists, with abilities in combat & self-defense which are based on reality.

Benefits of training include:

  • Cardio fitness & weight loss

  • Flexibility & athleticism

  • Toughness & conditioning

  • Speed, power & reflex

  • Improved posture and mobility

  • Balance, co-ordination & connectedness in movement

  • Relaxation, calmness, confidence & control

You’ll learn to keep composure & make decisions under pressure, develop a warrior mentality with street-smart knowledge & tactics for dealing with both skilled & unskilled aggressors in real life scenarios, which I’ve gained through over 15 years in Martial Arts & nearly a decade of working as a Bouncer on club doors.

Many people hesitate to take up some form of combat training, be it due to fear of injury, environmental intimidation or feelings of self-doubt & not being ‘good enough’ & so on. But it’s wise to keep in mind that toughness & skill is not something that is born, it’s something that is built. It’s true that there are individuals with natural talent above others. However, hard work & correct guidance is a time-tested way to close the gap between talent & skill.

In Martial Arts, each persons path is unique. Through proper training, you will find & tap into a better & stronger version of yourself. It is a choice that can positively influence the rest of your life, all you need to do is make it.
